Kakunodate Samurai District
Kakunodate is a small town with well-preserved samurai residences, which once housed about 80 families. The area still demonstrates some of the best examples of samurai architecture and housing in Japan nowadays. Of the samurai houses that remain intact, six are open to the public and offer visitors a chance to see how middle class and wealthy samurai families might have lived in the Edo period. There are also museums exhibiting the town’s history as well as traditional craft making.
Nyuto Onsen
Nyuto Onsen is a collective name of 7 hot spring inns located inside the Towada-Hachimantai National Park with a hot spring bath found at each of the inn. It is also known as a hidden spa in Japan because of its rural setting located deep in the forest. Each of the hot spring inn has their own unique hot spring source and offers spring water of different properties. Transportation service among 4 selected inns is provided with the tour which you can hop into an onsen at your own choice for a unique bathing experience.
Taenoyu features a modern Japanese interior and open-air baths along the mountain stream.
Ganiba Onsen features seasonal views from its open-air bath surrounded by primeval forests.
Kyukamura features modern facilities and an open-air bath surrounded by beech forest.
Okama Onsen features the nostalgic wooden architecture of a reconstructed school building.
Tazawako Kohan-no-mori Restaurant ORAE
The lakeside restaurant serves a selection of Western and Japanese cuisine made with fresh local produce alongside breath-taking Tazawa lake scenery. There is also a beer plant inside the store where local and fresh beer is brewed and a souvenir shop selling all kinds of specialties of Akita.
