Shirakawago

There are approximately 100 thatched roof houses, both large and small preserved in Shirakawago, and some of them are still lived by local people. With untouched natural beauty and unique look to a roof of the village, Shirakawago was designated as Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1976. What is more, it has been chosen as World UNESCO heritage sites in 1995, together with Gokayama.
Gokayama Suganuma Village

There are 12 households in Suganuma Village with only 9 traditional thatched roof houses. 2 of them were build during the Edo period( early 19th century-mid 19th century), and 6 of them were build in the Meiji period. The most recent build as late as 1925.
Suganuma village is smaller than other gasssho style village, but it is one of the well-preserved traditional village that represents Japan.
