Located on the outskirts of Sapporo, the vast “Takino Snow World” is a winter leisure park where visitors can fully experience the charm of Hokkaido’s snowy season. Endless fields of pristine white snow stretch across the landscape, offering a wide variety of winter activities suitable for everyone—from beginners to advanced enthusiasts—such as tube sledding, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe hiking.
Among these, the most popular attraction is the long-run snow tubing, where riders zoom down the slope in one exhilarating rush. Both adults and children can’t help but scream with excitement and burst into laughter as they race downhill.
In addition to the fun snow activities, a winter-exclusive nature walk is another highlight. Surrounded by crisp, refreshing air and serene snowy scenery, visitors can immerse themselves in the majestic natural beauty found only in Hokkaido during winter.
● Takino Cemetery — Snowy Moai Statues & Head Great Buddha Hall
In winter, Takino Cemetery transforms into a dreamlike landscape and has become a unique sightseeing spot. Rows of massive Moai statues blanketed in snow create an even more mysterious and otherworldly atmosphere, offering an experience that feels like stepping into another realm.
Another must-see is the Head Great Buddha Hall, designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando (separate admission required). The concrete architecture, contrasted by the surrounding snow, presents a breathtaking visual impact. The Great Buddha standing quietly amidst the snow evokes a deep sense of awe and spiritual calm.
This is a special place where culture and art harmoniously blend, allowing visitors to appreciate solemn and magnificent scenery that can only be seen in Hokkaido’s winter.
Located not far from central Sapporo, Hitsujigaoka Observation Hill is a popular spot offering sweeping views of Hokkaido’s expansive snowy plains. Winter air is exceptionally clear, and the endless stretch of pure white landscape showcases Hokkaido’s iconic seasonal beauty.
At the observation deck stands the famous bronze statue of Dr. William S. Clark, known for his inspirational words “Boys, be ambitious!”—a classic photo spot for all visitors.
With peaceful scenes of grazing sheep set against the wide-open panorama of Sapporo city, this location provides both visual and emotional relaxation. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the tranquil beauty unique to Hokkaido’s winter.
