The Wakakusa Hilltop Bus is a sightseeing bus that travels directly from JR Nara Station (East Exit, Bus Stop No. 4) and Kintetsu Nara Station (Sightseeing Bus Stop) to the summit of Mt. Wakakusa before returning via the Nara Prefectural Office (Kofuku-ji), Kintetsu Nara Station, and JR Nara Station.

The bus operates four times a day.

You’ll have approximately 45 minutes to explore the summit. After sightseeing, you can either return on the same bus or finish your trip at the summit and hike back down while enjoying the scenery.

How to Get to the Bus Stop from JR Nara Station (With Photos)

After arriving at JR Nara Station, head to the East Exit.

Using the Nara City Tourist Information Center as your landmark, walk to Bus Stop No. 4 at the East Bus Terminal.

The Wakakusa Hilltop Bus sign is clearly displayed, making it easy to find even for first-time visitors.

Onboard Facilities

Carry-on luggage can be stored on the overhead rack.

If you’re returning on the same bus after visiting the summit, you may leave your luggage onboard.

However, please take all valuables with you.

The bus features comfortable four-abreast seating with generous legroom.

The seat covers feature charming Nara-themed illustrations, including deer, deer crackers, Mt. Wakakusa, and kakinoha-zushi (persimmon leaf sushi). Since seating is unreserved, you can choose your favorite design.

Even the curtains have adorable deer patterns.

Each seat is equipped with a coat hook, mesh pocket, and drink holder.
Although the ride is only about 30 minutes, these thoughtful features make the journey more comfortable.

A restroom is located at the rear of the bus.

The wash basin is spacious and convenient for washing your hands.

Riding the Wakakusa Hilltop Bus: Our Experience

The Wakakusa Hilltop Bus operates four departures each day.

Since we planned to hike down from the summit, we chose the first departure, leaving JR Nara Station at 10:05 a.m.

If seats are available, you can board without a reservation. However, buses often fill up during weekends, public holidays, Golden Week, and the autumn foliage season. We recommend reserving your seat in advance.

When boarding, passengers receive a Mt. Wakakusa map and a return ticket.

If you finish your trip at the summit, you can use the return ticket to ride back to JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station from the Todaiji Daibutsuden / National Museum bus stop.

After departing JR Nara Station, the bus stops at Kintetsu Nara Station.

If you’re staying near Kintetsu Nara Station, it’s also a convenient place to board.

As the bus climbs higher, beautiful views of Nara City spread out below.

Some parts of the mountain road are quite narrow, making us think driving here ourselves might have been stressful.

Thankfully, our experienced driver handled every curve smoothly, allowing us to relax and enjoy the scenery.

For anyone who doesn’t want to rent a car or isn’t confident driving in Japan, this bus is an excellent option.

After getting off the bus, you’re welcomed by many friendly deer.

They were smaller than we expected, and their gentle eyes and adorable behavior were incredibly charming.

From the summit, you’ll enjoy spectacular panoramic views across Nara City.

The scenery is so peaceful that you’ll naturally want to stop and take a deep breath.

Three Great Breakfast Spots Before Catching the First Bus

The Wakakusa Hilltop Bus operates four departures daily, but the 10:05 a.m. departure from JR Nara Station is especially popular among visitors planning to hike down from the summit.

If you’re taking the first bus, you might wonder where to have breakfast.

Here are three local favorites that open early.

◻︎Ohanasan no Omusubiya

This cozy breakfast-only rice ball shop serves delicious set meals made with locally grown Nara rice.

Each set includes rice balls, grilled fish, side dishes, and miso soup.

While enjoying breakfast at the counter, the owner and local customers happily shared recommendations for places to visit in Nara.

The shop also has a notebook where visitors leave messages and the owner writes personal replies, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We left a message too and look forward to reading the owner’s reply on our next visit.

The shop is about 500 meters south of Kintetsu Nara Station.

If you eat breakfast here, boarding the bus at Kintetsu Nara Station is the most convenient option.

We chose the Japanese breakfast, featuring fresh eggs from Gojo City served over rice with locally made soy sauce.

The shop also sells regional specialties and souvenirs, making it a great place to browse before boarding the bus.

Since it’s located inside JR Nara Station, it’s especially convenient.

If you’re taking the first bus, it’s best to purchase your kakinoha-zushi the day before, as the shop opens after the first departure.
